Town Supervisor Reinforces Support for Local Youth Programs in 2026
Budget Planning
HANCOCK, NY – Town Supervisor Jerry Vernold today announced his commitment to include $2,000 in the upcoming 2026 town budget specifically to support local 4-H Club participation, funding camp scholarships for four area youth to attend one-week sessions at Camp Shankitunk or similar programs.
"Investing in our young people isn't just the right thing to do—it's essential for Hancock's future," said Vernold. "The 4-H program teaches kids responsibility, leadership, and community service. These are the values that make our community strong."
The announcement reinforces Vernold's long-standing commitment to youth development in the Delaware County region. During his tenure as Town Supervisor, Vernold has consistently supported local youth initiatives, including his successful distribution of over $220,000 in ARPA funds to local groups, fire departments, and community organizations. His personal dedication to youth mentorship spans 14 years as a Little League coach.
Local 4-H Impact
The funding will directly benefit the East Branch Mini Mania, a Delaware County 4-H equine club led by Lori Lamica-Nelson of East Branch. The club's miniature ponies have become a beloved fixture at local parades and community events, exemplifying the positive community presence that 4-H programs bring to the region.
"Lori and her 4-H club members are visible ambassadors for what positive youth development looks like," Vernold noted. "When you see those kids working with their animals at our local events, you're seeing the 4-H mission in action—building competence, character, and connection to our community."
Alignment with 4-H Mission
The funding aligns with the National 4-H mission of Positive Youth Development, which focuses on building sustained relationships between youth and adults, developing important life skills, and creating opportunities for young people to improve their communities. Camp Shankitunk, a key beneficiary of this funding, delivers programming that integrates these components through outdoor experiences including relationship building, problem-solving, team-building, communication, independence, and collaboration.
Proven Track Record of Youth Support
This 4-H commitment builds on Vernold's demonstrated record of supporting youth and family programs throughout Delaware County. His administration has:
• Created family-friendly facilities including the Hancock Hounds Dog Park
• Developed the Readburn Memorial Ball Field family park
• Completed the E. Branch Eagle Watch for educational opportunities
• Supported local fire departments and rescue squads that provide youth education programs
Community Investment Philosophy
"This isn't about politics—it's about priorities," Vernold emphasized. "While some focus on private development interests, I focus on investing in our kids and our community's future. That's what real leadership looks like."
The 4-H funding represents part of Vernold's broader approach to community-centered governance that has earned Hancock an "Excellent" financial rating from the New York State Comptroller's Office while maintaining a $5 million annual budget.
